Why Use a Weed Scale?

Most cannabis connoisseurs depend on their digital weed scales. Whether it’s one gram or 1/10th of a gram, the weighing machine will help ensure that you don’t get shorted or give anyone more than you realize. Use a weed scale for buying and selling purposes, gifting a friend some buds, or just scale your grow to see the yield.

Now, back to explaining about scales. Did you know that scales date back to early 4000 BC and that they provided humans with early understandings of numbers? Here is more about the inner workings of cannabis scales.

Where to Buy Your Weed Scale

Obviously, you cannot find a precise full-size or pocket digital scale at your local Walmart that is going to give you accuracy down to 1/10th of a gram. Whether you are a medical or recreational user, you want to purchase an affordable, quality, accurate cannabis scale from a reliable supplier.

You can find a large selection of pot scales that meet these requirements online at HerbScales.com. They ship globally and accept both PayPal and credit cards. This company provides free shipping, a safe shopping guarantee (all payment info submitted online is encoded using SSL technology), and discreet shipping. Orders typically reach customers within only 5-7 business days.

Types and Accuracy of Scales

There are both mechanical and digital weed scales, with the primary difference between them being how the weight displays on the scale. While a mechanical type uses more expertise for its readout than a digital one, the latter version tends to have more precision and speed. For a weed smoker, an electronic scale is overwhelmingly the preference.

Weed scales come in many sizes and have a range of features. The main types of weed scales available are pocket sized, stealth, and large scales.

Pocket Weed Scales

For personal use, pocket marijuana scales are the most popular type. They are small enough to be portable and simple to use. They often come with a protective lid, so that you can take them on the go with you without worrying about damage, and an expansion tray. Most pocket scales are battery powered, and pricing for a good one is around $30-$60.

While you will probably weigh 5-6 grams of weed on the platform, you can weigh more of it in less time with the expansion tray. Just put this tray on the scale’s platform and press the tare button so that the scale won’t add in the extra weight and you will get an accurate measurement in less time. With the expansion tray, you can expect to weigh 15-20 grams of pot at once.

A great example is the Blade weed scale 2.0, which is an upgrade on the popular original Blade weed scale. While it is a compact scale, the Blade Scale 2.0 offers a massive weighing surface because the display is on the underside of the scale. It boasts one of the biggest expansion trays for a pocket scale on the market today.

Blade weed scale 2.0 is slim and modern in appearance, in addition to being highly functional. The scale accurately weighs between 0.1g and 400g, while some pocket scales from competitors are limited to a 300g maximum. This Blade weighing device comes already calibrated for you.

The scale dimensions are 3in x 3in x 0.7in, with the platform measuring 2.9in x 2.9in. The backlit LCD makes reading the weight easy, even in dim light, and it has a simple tare feature too.

In general, pocket scales are perfect for weighing small amounts; they are accurate and quick to use in these instances. If, however, you plan to weigh a few ounces every time you use it, a larger scale would be optimal.

Stealth Weed Scales

This category refers to weed scales on the stealth side. Look for a scale that can weigh down to 0.1 grams. These unique digital scales are made to look like everyday items, which hides their real use. Some scales, for example, look like energy drink cans, while others are disguised as a pack of cigarettes, computer mouse, or cell phone from the outside.

The CD Scale is designed to look like a CD-ROM case and pulls off its stealthy appearance well. In reality, it is a scale capable of weighing between 0.1g and 1,000g of weed in the full-size version, while the miniature CD is accurate for 0.1-500 grams. Perhaps the best part about this digital stealth scale is that it comes with five different CD slip covers so that you can pick the style of music that best fits your tastes so that the item won’t appear out of place in your home or elsewhere.

The CD Scale includes a black carrying sleeve to help protect it when you are on the go or if it is in storage. Note that the mini size is much more portable than the full-size model. While the full-sized scale runs on AAA batteries, the mini version uses watch batteries (CR2032). In both cases, the batteries are included.

Stealth-and-Pocket-Scale Combinations

Imagine a marijuana scale that combines discreet properties with a small size. You could be describing the Matchbox Stealth pocket weed scale, which is the smallest digital scale in the world. The micro scale is just as accurate as full-size pocket scales but is tiny in comparison. It is the same size as a real matchbox and looks just like one too. The scale measures 1.4in x 2.9in x 0.5in, while the platform is 1.4in x 1.8in.

The Matchbox scale has two models: 0.1g to 650g or 0.1g to 100g. There are five designs available for the matchbox cover too. The batteries are included in this functional, accurate stealth scale that has a simple tare feature and backlit screen display. It comes already calibrated.

Large/Table/High Capacity Weed Scales

When you are regularly using large quantities of weed, a table top or large digital weed scale is likely your best choice. Buying a high capacity scale will save you time and energy as you can weigh larger amounts of cannabis at once than with a pocket scale. It can be frustrating only being able to weigh a few grams at a time on a pocket scale.

A large weed scale can weigh down to as little as 0.1 grams but up to more than 500 grams. The big platform surface size of a table top cannabis scale is great too; it can be 4 inches or bigger, with some models being 9 inches. If heavy duty weighing is part of your lifestyle, a table scale is likely the way to go.

However, you won’t find this type of digital scale in a big box store, at least not if you want it to be accurate and well made. Instead, choose a reputable local or online headshop for your purchase. A great high capacity pot scale is the HEX 3000. It is a bowl scale that uses a high-res load cell for accurate results. The removable expansion bowl has a 3-liter volume, making it a cinch to measure loose materials. The platform, without the bowl, is huge at 5.7in x 5.7in.

Its backlit screen provides easy reading of measurements. For the power source, the HEX 3000 weed scale scale runs on an AC adapter or batteries (both included). Having an alternative to batteries is great if they get drained before you are done a weighing session.

Or, perhaps you are looking for a hybrid like the SC Series weed scale that has one of the biggest platforms of any pocket scale on the market. The weighing platform is 4in x 4in, which is huge by any pocket scale standards.

Another great feature of the SC Series scales is that they run on either an (included) AC adapter or batteries. Thus, you never have to worry about having no battery juice left when in the middle of weighing weed. In contrast, most pocket scales require batteries.

The SC Series weed scale has two weighing modes: 0.1g to 500g or 0.1g to 2,000g. The scale measures 5.0in x 4.1in x 0.7in, with a platform of 4.0in x 4.0in. These digital scales have a blue backlit display for the convenience of weighing cannabis even in low-light situations, and a simple tare feature. They come calibrated.

Milligram Weed Scales

For weighing extremely small quantities of marijuana, milligram weed scales may meet your needs. Their main distinguishing feature is the ability to measure down to 0.001 grams. Some models can even measure 0.0001 grams. The ultra-precise scale is popular with measuring dabs or a dose of concentrate made by extracting THC or other cannabinoids from cannabis. Other names for dabs are budder, wax, and shatter.

Getting precise weights of these tiny amounts is easier with milligram scales than stealth or table scales. The precision of the milligram scale enables you to get its real physical value while if you use a scale with a 1-gram readability for a weight under 0.5 grams it will have a readout of 0 grams, which is not accurate. Although rounding always happens, if you select a milligram scale then the error from rounding will be minuscule and insignificant because it has a very small readability.

If your main focus though is a high-precision electronic scale, the Mini Pro weed scale is a keeper. It is specially designed to accurately weigh small items. It is made to measure quantities from 0.001 grams to 50 grams.

The included expansion tray helps prevent waste and the special edging on it enables easy pouring of herbs into small containers. The weighing surface, with its 2.7-inch diameter, is twice that of most other precision scales available in 2017. The Mini Pro weed scale measures 5.2in x 3.7in x 2.3in. It has simple tare ability and backlit screen for easiness of reading the weights.

The Mini Pro runs on either an AC adopter or AAA batteries, both of which come with the scale. We like that you won’t have to use batteries every time, unlike most digital scales. Also, a 50-gram calibration weight is included with purchase to help give you accurate numbers every time.

How Do Weed Scales Work?

When we talk about weight as it relates to weed scales, usually what we are referring to is mass. While mass is the amount of matter within something, weight is the measure of how much the force of gravity acts on a certain quantity of mass. Units of mass include pounds, kilograms, ounces, and grams. Weight is often written in mass units because any mass on our planet converts the same way to weight.

When a scale measures the weight of something, it typically measures the amount of force between the object on the scale and Earth. But, while scales measure force, the readout is a measurement of mass, such as grams and kilograms. While this seems confusing at first, it makes sense given the information in the preceding paragraph; mass and weight are often used as synonyms for one another.

Weed scales typically consist of a pointer and dial on the outside, a balancing pan or platform for the object of measurement, and a platform inside that is unseen. The scale weighs the object put on the pan with reference weight(s) inside the scale. It measures force along one direction, known as the principal axis; in the case of the scale, the force is downward due to Earth’s gravitational pull.

There are different kinds of scales, which vary by types of parts and operational principles:

Mechanical Cannabis Scales

A spring weed scale is an example of a mechanical scale, with this type of scale originating back in the 1700s. When an object is put on the balancing pan, the interior platform lowers and stretches a strong spring in the process. A heavier object will sink lower than a lighter one due to gravity, stretching the spring more. The basis for the design of the spring scale is Hooke’s Law.

Springs are not a part of every scale, although they do all share the use of mechanical apparatuses to measure weight. All scales provide a weight measurement without comparing it to another object, including the digital scales that are commonly used for weighing weed.

Digital Cannabis Scales

The digital weed scales that commonly weigh marijuana usually have in a load cell, which converts energy from one form to another. The load cell supplies the measurement and converts mechanical energy (pressure) into electrical (digital). As the load cell compresses under the object’s weight, so does the strain gauge, which changes the electrical resistance of the latter metal part. A Wheatstone bridge measures the difference in resistance, and the scale provides a readout that comes from the change in resistance.

Digital weed scales reduce or totally eliminate the opportunity for human error, which is why they are typically used by cannabis consumers instead of the mechanical type. The high accuracy levels are due to electronic load cells within the weed scales. The readout is then clearly shown on a digital LCD screen. The internal mechanisms take care of all of the math work.

The main disadvantage though is that electronic scales require electricity to run; the reason is that the load cells themselves need electrical power to function. Most digital weed scales use batteries; if they are AAA or AA batteries, they are easy to replace though as they are available at the local drugstore.

Requirements of a Good Marijuana Scale

Thankfully good weed scales have come down in price recently, likely because of the increasing demand for them as the medical marijuana industry grows continually. The pricey part though is the cannabis you purchase, so using an accurate scale is important. Here are must-have attributes of a portable pocket scale or another type for measuring pot.

Appropriate Capacity

Usually, pot is weighed out by the gram, at least in the United States. So, an American will want a scale that shows grams. Also, the scale needs to be accurate to 1/10th or 0.1 of a gram. If the scale only says 1 gram, 2 grams, etc., you will not find it helpful for weighing marijuana.

As for the maximum capacity of the weed scales, it will depend on how much you plan to weigh regularly on it. If you are handling large quantities, look for a 1000-gram maximum or higher. You may also want to weight down to 1/100ths of a gram, depending on your needs. However, if you are only using the digital scale for your own use, a 200-gram max will likely suffice.

Quality Parts

While a cheap product is easy on the wallet, it is less likely to be of high quality. As a result, this scale will likely not last you past a few months of use, if that, and you will have to spend more time then shopping for a new one. A weed scale has to be precise, and you likely won’t get that is you buy a poorly made, flimsy scale at the local gas station or Walmart. We only recommend pot scales that are manufactured with high-quality parts.

Calibrated

Calibration refers to the series of operations to control the difference between a known reference and the amount the scale misrepresents this weight. Adjustment of the pot scale refers to making it within tolerable accuracy.

Calibration of a weed scale is very important to achieving maximum measuring performance out of the device. There are different calibration weights, as we describe later on in this guide. Not all digital scales come calibrated from the factory, but for the ones that say they have a Class 1 calibration weight, this designation means they can be used as a reference standard in calibrating other weights. Class 1 is suitable for calibrating high-precision scales between 0.01mg and 0.1mg.

While cannabis scales with factory calibration are usually more expensive than those that do not come calibrated from the factory, you get the benefit of having a highly accurate and precise scale because it has been subject to quality checks. Another advantage of choosing a scale that has been calibrated for you already is that you won’t have to go about doing it yourself. You will avoid spending your hard-earned money on an inaccurate scale too.

Of course, you will need to recalibrate the device if you use it regularly, as we discuss in detail later in the section titled “What are Calibration Weights?” If calibration is done well, the scale’s accuracy is within one display resolution, meaning the smallest weight increment the scale can show on its readout.

Overload Protection

Overload refers to putting a load on the scale platform that exceeds its maximum capacity. Should this happen, an “E” will appear on the weed scale‘s display if it has overload protection. Immediately remove the load from the weighing platform if you see the “E” and the scale should return to normal. As putting too much weight on the platform can damage the load cell or another weighing system, overload protection is important to have if you are looking for a long-lasting cannabis scale.

Tare Function

Many cannabis scales have a zero or tare button. Pressing this button resets the scale to zero on its display when you have an empty container on the weighing platform. Put the empty bowl or cup on the scale before pressing the button to zero out the weight properly and get an accurate measurement when you then fill its contents. The tare function is important when you are weighing difficult items; you can place them in a container on the scale without worry that the container’s weight is throwing off the measurement.

Accuracy of Weed Scales

Weed scales are amazing when you think about it because they can measure weights under virtually any conditions surrounding them, all while controlling the potential for error. But there are some inaccuracies that can occur. For example, measuring the same amount of weed on two different scales may lead to two results.

Essentially, we are talking about problems with accuracy or how consistent a given measurement is with the actual value of that measurement. A good scale is as close as possible to the standard value.

What Accounts for Inaccurate Weight Scales?

If a misreading occurs, different mechanical and environmental factors can explain the inconsistency, including:

Temperature – An increase or decrease in temperature can affect the inner workings of a marijuana scale, throwing off the accuracy of its reading.

Local Gravity – The measured weight can vary, depending on the local force of the Earth’s gravity; the force can be +/- 0.5 percent, depending where you use it in the world.

Air Buoyancy – Displaced air can add buoyancy to the item being weighed, especially in large quantities.

Dust – If dust builds up on the weighing platform, it can alter the readout.

Air Pressure – An increase in altitude will decrease the weight of the object.

Moisture – Try to store the scale in ambient temperature to minimize the effect of moisture on the readout.

Operator Error – Mismeasurement of the weed may occur, and operators might also move dust and moisture to the cannabis on the platform while handling it.

Also, weed scales may become less accurate over time with frequent use. Not all scales are highly accurate either, although load cells for digital scales became more exact in the late 20th century, which enabled them to be useful for wider use. Scales have different capacities for the amount they can measure precisely too.

How to Maintain Weed Scale Accuracy

Digital weed scales, to perform their best, should be on a flat, stationary surface. They should also be stored at room temperature; usually, the optimal temperature, such as 10-30 degrees Celsius, will be written on the product page. Keep in mind too that digital scales are the most accurate when they weigh weed close to the middle of their capacity range, rather than at the lower or upper weight limit.

Also, as explained earlier, getting accurate weighing measurements on your scale requires regular calibration. Here is more about how calibration works and why the weights are important.

What are Calibration Weights?

Regarding accuracy, scales express it as a percentage of the total scale capacity, which provides the total scale capacity. This percentage provides a range of what to expect from a calibrated scale. Usually, a higher-costing scale has more precision than a lower-cost one.

Why Calibrate a Marijuana Scale?

By now you are probably wondering more about how you know whether your scale is accurate or not. Scale accuracy is judged by calibration weights as well by the principles of reproducibility and repeatability. While repeatability refers to the consistency of measurements under different conditions, reproducibility is the scale’s ability to show the same results under identical conditions.

It can be tough to determine weed scale accuracy unless you have a known weight value, such as a calibration weight. As a scale can get worn down over time and a misreading can occur due to a range of factors (see the list in the last section), the best practice for cannabis scales is to calibrate them regularly. Depending on usage, calibration can be once a month or once a week, in addition to every time you replace the batteries or move the scale.

So, precision weights are a great way to test scale accuracy and calibrate the scale too. If a scale does not come calibrated, then you will need to do so before you begin to use it. Even if it comes calibrated already, use the weights later to ensure it stays accurate as you regularly use it. Quality scales can be recalibrated, so they are the best choice. Please note that calibration weights do not come with a specific due date for recalibration but it is instead up to the user to determine when to do so, depending on use and if external factors are affecting the scale’s accuracy.

How to Buy and Use Calibration Weights

Get a range of Calibration Weights for your digital pocket scale or another type of electronic scale. For weed scales, usually, the weights you see are between 1 gram and 2000 grams. Which ones you require will depend on the capacity of your scale. You can buy them individually or as a set.

It is easiest to use the weights to do the job and then you can confirm the weed scale’s accuracy. Using precision weights is much simpler than dividing the target mass into grams using a certain number of nickels; most cannabis connoisseurs prefer to use calibration weights instead of the finicky old-school nickel method.

Are you wondering the best way to use the weights? Place them directly on the pan or platform rather than sliding them. Avoid the sliding motion as it can reduce mass. Remove them directly too. If you need to clean the weights, use a cloth or small brush specifically made for calibration weights rather than a non-weight-specific instrument that may cause the removal of mass. If you drop the weight, it will need to be recalibrated.

Also important to mention is that calibration weights are often not returnable. The reason is that they are custom made and certified on the date of manufacturing. Also, if you touch the weight, oils from your hands (naturally occurring on the skin) may change the tolerance, making the weight less than accurate and unsuitable for resale.

The Latest Trend: Weed Scale Apps

The features of cannabis scales are continually being updated and just when we thought we had it all figured out, along came weed scale apps. These applications allow you to weigh your weed simply by putting it on top of your smartphone or tablet. There are Android, iOS, and Windows Phone versions. The obvious advantage of the scale simulator is that you can see right then and there how much cannabis is being given to you so that you don’t get shorted.

But keep in mind that weed scale apps have significant limitations. Firstly, they work best for weighing small quantities and won’t have the ability to measure large quantities accurately. Secondly, the overall precision will be lower than for a real scale. Remember, your smartphone does not have a scale in it. The app makes an estimate of the weight, which is what shows up on your screen.

In other words, while you can use the cannabis app as an approximation of the weight, it is not to be taken as totally accurate. To try to get the best reading possible, put the weed as gently as possible on the mobile device. We recognize that this technology is new and may become more accurate over the next few years. In the meantime, opt for a real digital scale instead.

Conclusions on Weed Scales

Use this guide to help you to weigh marijuana as accurately as possible by choosing the best type of weed scale for your needs, such as a pocket scale or milligram scale for medicinal purposes. As well, by now, you should be comfortable with the terms that accompany weed scales, such as tare and calibration. While there are factors that can affect weighing accuracy, buying a good scale, such as the ones we suggested in this document, and using calibration weights regularly, will help ensure you get the precision you want every time you measure cannabis. While weed scale apps are new to the market, we still prefer actual digital scales for their higher accuracy overall.
